Snow Day

Today would have been only the third day of classes, but we already have a snow storm closing. It started early this morning and supposedly it will last until the evening. It's nice to stay inside and do some reading and relaxing. However I had to go into town because two of my teachers gave me a list of books I have to buy and have already assigned work in them, one of them due tomorrow! This teacher who has readings due tomorrow also said that the books were "reasonably cheap". Really? Do you call over $78 for a small paper back book "reasonably cheap"? And the other one is $17. So that is a grand total of $95 dollars!! Now there are books for classes that are more expensive, however adding this amount with all the other books I have to buy, not cheap.

So when I walked out of my dorm I saw this little tractor. Too bad it wasn't being put to work because the path was deep with snow. And when I returned from town it hadn't moved either. Great work!

Going down the street I couldn't use the sidewalks because they were all covered with snow. This can be very dangerous because all I need is someone to slide and hit me. A watchful eye and walking into traffic can prevent a surprise hit.

You can't really see it but the snow is coming down in sheets. It is a powdery snow so it's not heavy at all, however it's like walking through very loose sand and makes walking that much harder. It doesn't help either that there is ice under the snow to make it more slippery.

I took the bus into town and they were still trying to clear the sidewalks and streets. People were out with snowblowers and shovels.

At the book store I was able to find 3 out of my 4 books and I will have to order the other one online. I also bought a Arabic verbs book that looks really helpful for my language class. So it was a good trip into town and not that much of a hassle.

Besides this snow, semester is going well. I'm going to be taking 19 credits once I get an override to do so. The extra credits come from being an editor with a local student run media on campus. I am their new photo editor and will be working with the other one to create an agenda for their photo blog, creating tutorials, and editing photo content for the site. I'm really excited to do this job and the opportunity to put it on my resume. I'm also really excited about taking a news writing and reporting class as well as a world politics class. They will both be challenging, but tons of fun.

While in my first news writing class yesterday, the fire alarm went off in the library where the class is held. I'm still amazed at how slow people are to realizing that an alarm is going off. They all looked like deer in headlights. While I'm jumping out of my seat getting my jacket on, people are still sitting there and I just had to say "It's the fire alarm", hoping people will start moving. They did eventually and we made it out safely.

Two fire fighters entered the building along with a fire inspector from what I can guess and a police officer.

They were in there a while, and as I was waiting this woman next to me mentioned that this had happened yesterday too as well as last week because of all of the construction they are doing inside. So there wasn't much of a story and I couldn't really get a good shot with my Canon Powershot.

This photo is of one of the librarians telling a student to back away from the building. I mean, seriously. How can you not hear the alarm across campus, see the flashing lights, or the students surrounding the side of the building? I was just amazed at how oblivious these student were. In their own little world I guess.

This weekend we have a fencing tournament, so I'm pumped for that. I haven't done any practice this week because the university won't let clubs into this gym for the first week, which is retarded. However, I can do better at tournaments sometimes if I haven't been stressing over fencing all week and just show up to fence, not to win. My parents might also be coming to see me fence. I can't remember the last time one of them did that. It's not really much of a spectator sport unless you have fenced before or watched a lot of it to understand what is going on, so I don't feel bad about that.

I hope to be updating this more often. I've gotten around to writing in my journal, so hopefully that will be a jump start for this too.

Ciao!
